January is Crime Stoppers Month

Kawartha-Haliburton Crime Stoppers is kicking off Crime Stoppers Month for the month of January with the theme ‘Helping All Communities Stay Safe’.

“Kawartha-Haliburton Crime Stoppers, along with many Crime Stoppers organizations across North America begin Crime Stoppers Month,” said Garry Burns, President of Kawartha-Haliburton Crime Stoppers. “January recognizes our organization’s efforts to help law enforcement solve crimes. It is also a time to show appreciation for the team of members that makes the work possible.”

The organization first opened their doors in 1989 as ‘Lindsay Crime Stoppers’. In 1991, the organization expanded to Kawartha-Haliburton Crime Stoppers. Now, 30 years later, it has maintained the original principle of helping law enforcement agencies solve crimes and make communities safe.

“KH Crime Stoppers is a partnership between the community, the Ontario Provincial Police, Kawartha Lakes Police Service and the media,” added Keith Kirkpatrick, a member of the Board of Directors. “Crime Stoppers Month looks to highlight those important community partnerships.”

Kawartha-Haliburton Crime Stoppers is run by a volunteer board of directors and recently appealed to the public for financial assistance to save the future of the organization.

“We have been touched and we are truly grateful with the support we have received from our call to action to the community,” noted Steve Green, a member of the Board of Directors. “We’ve secured some donations and assistance from individuals, which will see us being able to operate for this year. However, we are not out of the woods yet.”

“This year’s Crime Stoppers Month Theme, ‘Helping All Communities Stay Safe’ is very fitting,” remarked Dylan Robichaud, Vice-President of Kawartha-Haliburton Crime Stoppers. “It emphasizes the importance of working together, especially during these challenging times, to raise awareness about reporting crimes and the vital need of Crime Stoppers for all communities in Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton County.”

The Local Crime Stoppers still requires support and donations from the communities it serves, and it hopes that Crime Stoppers Month can help highlight the benefit of the organization to secure that assistance.

“We are learning, we are changing, and we are adapting. The Board of Directors wants to breathe new life into the organization to see long-term success,” stated Robichaud. “We are looking for new board members who are looking to volunteer a little of their time and expertise.”

Robichaud continued the organization’s ask for donations saying that would like to donate can do so online at www.khcrimestoppers.com/donate, by cheque made payable to “Kawartha-Haliburton Crime Stoppers Inc” mailed to PO BOX 155, Lindsay, ON K9V 4R8 or for sponsorship or other inquiries email admin@khcrimestoppers.com.
