Flooding season is here - are you prepared?

Press Release from City of Kawartha Lakes

Each year as the spring thaw approaches, areas of the municipality are known to be prone to flooding. Residents who live or have property near flood prone areas are urged to take time now to take proactive steps to prepare for the season.

Prepare your property:

Kawartha Lakes Fire Rescue Service, in partnership with Public Works, has prepared both filled sandbags as well as provided materials for residents to make their own sandbags.

Residents are reminded that it is their responsibility to prepare their property as best as they can, however to assist with increased safety measures, the municipality is supplying sandbags and sandbag materials in advance to help with preparation.

Please see the following locations below for information on what materials are available:

Locations with pre-filled bags for pick up:

  • Burnt River Community Centre: 16 Somerville Centre Road, Burnt River

  • Coboconk Legion Park: Highway 35 North, Coboconk

  • Omemee Fire Station: 14 Mary Street East, Omemee

Locations with sand and bags for residents:

Please note: For locations with sand and bags available, residents will need to bring a shovel to fill the bags.

  • Chisholm Trail: Between Black River Road and Sadowa Road

  • Dalton Community Centre: 13 Rumohr Dr, Sebright

  • Dunsford Community Centre: 26 Community Centre Rd, Dunsford

  • Ward Park: 17675 Highway 35 North, Norland

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the supplies and prepare their properties now. As the warmer weather approaches with the possibility of rain, it’s important to act now and ensure you have a plan in place should flooding occur.

Learn more about flooding

Kawartha Conservation is reminding residents of the dangers that exist near bodies of water, particularly around this time of year, and urges people to keep family and pets away from the edges of all waterways. As the weather becomes warmer, the melting snow and future rain will contribute to higher water levels and increased flows in local rivers and lakes. Don’t miss their upcoming information sessions on flooding preparedness.
