Board Games Build Community

Board games have been a source of entertainment for centuries, dating back, at least, to ancient Egypt.

Forget everything you know about dusty old board games! Modern board games have undergone a thrilling evolution. With over 160,000 games available and thousands more with sophisticated themes and immersive experiences released each year, there's a perfect match for every interest and skill level. From simple, laugh-out-loud party games to intricate strategy epics, the board game world is bursting with possibilities.

But board games are more than just entertainment; they're a powerful tool for building community. Beyond the cognitive benefits such as improved concentration and memory, strategic decision-making and creative problem-solving, playing board games offers a wealth of social advantages. They help build relationships, foster communication, negotiation and social skills, teamwork, and empathy, all while promoting a sense of belonging.

The Magic Circle of Board Games

Picture this: You sit down at a table, surrounded by new faces. As the game begins, something magical happens. The outside world fades away, and you enter a special space where you're free to be anyone – a cunning detective, a medieval merchant, a mischievous world traveler or a faithful bird watcher. We call this The Magic Circle. In the Magic Circle we all agree to a set of rules that only exist in the alternative reality of the game and shed the expectations and narratives of our normal lives.

Opportunities are provided to interact, take risks, share ideas, compete in a fun environment and connect with others without the pressures of everyday life. This provides players with a common connection and helps build relationships based on these shared experiences.

Lasting friendships are forged over laughter and strategy, creating a sense of belonging that extends beyond the game itself. It's a simple yet powerful way to build relationships among people from all walks of life in a fun and engaging environment.

My wife and I have experienced this firsthand. Many of our closest friends are people we met through board gaming. We've even attended their weddings – and they've attended ours!

Building a Stronger Community

Board game groups are a great place to make new friends and meet people in your community. By joining a board game group, you're not just signing up for fun – you're becoming part of a vibrant, welcoming community. Our group members rave about the friendships they've made, the unforgettable memories, the great conversations and the sense of belonging they've found.

Ready to roll the dice on new friendships and exciting adventures? Join us at the gaming table, there is always a friendly face available to teach you a new game – your next great connection might be just a card flip away!

Our board game group meets on the 2nd Saturday of every month at the Immanuel Baptist Church Fenelon Falls (20 Bond Street East, Fenelon Falls), from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm and on the last Saturday of each month in Bobcaygeon at the Bobcaygeon Library.
