Breast in Show Exhibition

Brenda Benedet became an artist when her life was rudely interrupted in 2018 with a breast cancer diagnosis. During the peaks and valleys of healing, Brenda took formal art training. Initially her inspiration came from sunsets, cottages, and birds that surrounded her home on Four Mile Lake. She volunteers as a Peer Support for patients with breast cancer as they take the journey that 1 in 8 women will also find themselves on.

Every month, approximately 960 people are screened for breast cancer at Ross Memorial Hospital. Of those, more than 150-200 require follow-up tests using a variety of imaging modalities. Most of these people need further investigation due to visible anomalies in their images or because changes were noted since their last exam. The other 30% are people who have found a lump or who are experiencing other symptoms.

Opening reception Wednesday, October 4th from 5-7pm. Refreshments will be served. There will also be:

  • An exhibition of Brenda’s wool paintings

  • Silent auction featuring artworks from local artists

  • Talk – Debunking the Myths of Breast Cancer on Thursday, October 19th from 7 p.m.

  • Talk – Dot-Dot-Dash: Decoding the Language of Breast Cancer on Thursday, October 26th from 7 p.m.

  • 3-D Felted/Mixed Media Breasts: an installation featuring 10-12 diverse breasts so people can see and feel uncommon signs of breast cancer. It will help to debunk common myths about how and what to look for.
