Cross Country Quilt Tour Chapter 2

In the first installment we saw a picture of the Stephen Lewis Foundation 20th Anniversary quilt: the entire quilt, from afar. Now the quilt has actually arrived in Fenelon Falls and we can see the breath taking reality and the minute details. It was featured at Moonlight Madness at the Lil Wee Quilt Shoppe on Saturday June 24.

The quilt had about 100 viewers,.including some lovely insightful children. Visitors came from far away; Trenton, Mississauga and even two ladies from Minnesota! (They were “loopers” coming in big yachts up the inland waterway from America, then coming up the Trent Severn from Lake Ontario)

Vivian, who runs the Quilt shop is very knowledgeable and she explained many of the details. There is free motion machine quilting around the leaves, branches and roots and through the earth layers.  Many of the 153 unique hand cut fabric leaves are hand stitched and hand beaded. The border of the quilt is made up of 44 pieces with African theme appliques.

The quilt is a symbol of solidarity between African Grandmothers and Canadian Grandmothers. Over 300 grandmothers from Canada and countries in sub-Saharan Africa contributed to this quilt.

If you missed seeing the quilt at Moonlight Madness it will be hanging proudly in the window of the Wee Little Quilt Shoppe on Canada Day, at the Sturgeon Point Art show on July 8, at the Fenelon Falls library from July 11 to July 14 and at the Maryboro Lodge, Fenelon Museum on Wednesday July 19 during the afternoon tea.
