Globus Theatre’s 2024 theatre season starts this May with master storyteller Mark Whelan

Globus Theatre kicks off the 21st season on May 10 with a special event, An Evening with Mark Whelan: Raised on Songs and Stories.

Raised on Songs and Stories is an intimate cabaret performance by singer and storyteller Mark Whelan who has performed at Globus Theatre many times and is an audience favourite on stage and off. Over the course of the evening (or afternoon during our special Mother's Day performance), Mark takes the audience on a colourful journey through his formative years. Shared through personal story, music and song, we travel through a grown man's boyhood as he reminiscences of life and love in Dublin in the 70's. Mark’s captivating personality and engaging performances make all his shows special, and this fun engaging story is sure to evoke memories of times gone by.

Originally from Dublin and a graduate of the Irish College of Music, Mark has become a regular performer in film, tv and theatre. Previous appearances at Globus Theatre include Stones in his Pockets, Sunshine Express and most recently Tip of the Iceberg in last year's 20th anniversary season. In film & TV Mark’s credits include Republic of Doyle, Murdoch Mysteries, The Divide, Sunday at Tiffany's and Pompeii. In addition to being a founding member of The Irish Stage Company he has also written and produced a one-man live performance production “Is This Love”, examining the power and effect of love through stories and song. Mark is probably most recognizable from his stint as "the Sleeman Guy" in those commercials where he was "notoriously good."

An Evening with Mark Whelan is just the start of an exciting lineup of shows for Globus' 21st season of professional theatre in the Kawartha Lakes. The season of plays, music and comedy is scheduled to run from May 10 to December 15 and features 10 mainstage shows as well as two additional special events. From May 29 to June 8, the World Premiere of The Dating Game by Olivier Award-winning playwright Peter Quilter (Glorious, End of the Rainbow) will take the stage, starring resident funny couple Sarah Quick and James Barrett, alongside two-time Dora award winner Lisa Horner (The Wizard of Oz, Come From Away, Mirvish Productions; Grey Gardens, Musical Stage Company) and the hilarious Matthew Olver (The Three Musketeers, The Foursome, Buying the Moose, Globus Theatre).

The season also includes the first live stage version of popular sports podcast This Day in Sports; new original Murder Mysteries Who Killed the King (based on the popular The Collingwood Elvis Festival) and Murder at the Snowball Ball; two heartwarming comedies, The Ladies Foursome by Norm Foster and Where You Are, by Kristen Da Silva; and, to coincide with the International Ploughing Match being held in the Kawartha Lakes this year, a rural Canadian comedy Buying the Farm. For music lovers, the season features two sensational concerts as well: Bond, James Bond: The Songs of 007 performed by the multiple award-winning Rebecca Perry and Early Morning Rain starring audience favourite Leisa Way. Plus, the all funny comedy extravaganza Girls Nite Out is back for two nights in August, and the season is rounded out by a new playreading of Poster Boy by the playwrights who brought you Tip of the Iceberg last year.

"I am so excited about the season. Thirteen shows is a lot certainly, but there isn't a single one I'd want to take out of the mix. They are each so different from each other and unique in their own way, combined they form a really great 8 months of theatre with some of the best performers on stage today. We have a growing number of people coming to everything this year, just so fantastic. You don't have to subscribe to all thirteen shows though, we have subscriptions for 4, 5, or 6 shows too! If this is your first year joining us, talk to our lovely box office people and they will guide you in the right direction as to which shows would be good for you. We can't wait to welcome everyone." Artistic Director Sarah Quick
