Millennium Time Capsule to be Opened After 25 Years

Kawartha Lakes – Twenty-five years after its dedication, the time capsule installed under the eternal flame in Lindsay is due to be opened.

When: Tuesday, December 16, 2025

Where: In front of the Kawartha Lakes Library, Lindsay Branch (Queens Square)

In the year 2000, amidst the thoughtful renovation of Queens Square and in celebration of the Lindsay Millennium, this time capsule was carefully installed, and an eternal flame was lit. It stood as a solemn testament to the community’s enduring spirit, capturing the hopes, memories, and aspirations of Lindsay’s citizens at the dawn of a new millennium.

Enshrined under the eternal flame and in accordance with the instructions inscribed on the pillar, the time capsule is to be opened in December 2025. The flame will then be rededicated by Mayor Doug Elmslie in honour of the legacy of Victoria County and to symbolize the continued growth of the communities in Kawartha Lakes.

“It will be both entertaining and exciting to observe the opening of the 2000 Time Capsule,” said Barb Truax. “It will tug on memories of an earlier time and possibly surprise us.” Barb was the Co-Chair, along with George Inrig, of the Lindsay Millennium Committee.

Kawartha Lakes extends its heartfelt gratitude to all members of the Town of Lindsay Committee of Council’s Events Office for the Light Up Lindsay Committee, the Lindsay Millennium Committee, and to everyone whose dedication and efforts brought the time capsule and eternal flame projects to fruition.

We cordially invite all individuals involved in these meaningful initiatives to gather in front of the library at 9:30 am on the morning of December 16, 2025, to commemorate this special occasion together.

We also invite all residents to join in this celebration for the opening of the Time Capsule at 10 am. Following the removal of the time capsule from the pillar at 10 am, we invite you to join us across the street in the atrium of Kent Street Mall at 10:30 am for the opening and unveiling of the items preserved within the 2000 Time Capsule.

If you are unable to attend the opening in person, we invite you to watch as we live-stream the event on Kawartha Lakes' Instagram account. Live streams will start at 10 am during the removal of the capsule, and resume at 10:30 am when items will be extracted.

We look forward to having the items from the time capsule on display at the Library in Lindsay later this week.

This event is weather-dependent.
