Once in a Blue Moon - Aug 25th
On August 25, 2023 at Settlers Village in Bobcaygeon, ONCE IN A BLUE MOON is a chance to further enhance this relationship. Join us at 5:00 pm to browse the amazing line-up of silent auction items, then enjoy a sit-down dinner prepared by Indigenous Chef, Thomas Olszewski. After dinner, Dave Mowat (former Chief of Alderville First Nation) will lead his band in some amazing toe-tapping blues music for our enjoyment. The event is a fundraiser for the Mishkodeh Centre for Indigenous Knowledge. Tickets are available by emailing us at: connect@mishkodeh.org.
In 2015, Curve Lake First Nation knowledge keeper and elder, Doug Williams (GIdigaa Migizi-bun) shared the story of how land in the heart of Bobcaygeon, on the shallow rapids between Pigeon lake and Sturgeon lake was the site of a “mishkodeh” (meadow). The history of mishkodehs does far back in time when Indigenous peoples created clearings through controlled burning techniques to cultivate trees and medicinal plants to have spaces for their communities to gather.
The Mishkodeh Centre was born in 2021. The Centre grew out of the work of Truth and Reconciliation Community - Bobcaygeon. The Centre was inspired by the conversations with GIdigaa Migizi-bun, but also the relationships that we were building with First Peoples from Curve Lake First Nation and other local communities, the 215+ commemorative stones representing the Indigenous children buried next to residential institutions, the 94 Truth and Reconciliation recommendations, the 234 Recommendations from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Woman and Girls Report.
The Mishkodeh Centre incorporated in September, 2021 and gained charitable status from the Canada Revenue Agency in March, 2023. We have a Letter of Support from CLFN Chief and Council and are working together towards a joint educational project. The dream is to create an Indigenous-settler project on the land. Our main aim is to facilitate education, healing and relationship building between Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous people in Bobcaygeon and surrounding areas.
Miigwetch! Join us on Friday, August 25 at 5:00 pm in Bobcaygeon.
We hope to see you there!
