Ontario Theatre Celebrates Canada's World Cup Moment with Original Comedy Mystery

As the world turns its attention to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Globus Theatre is serving up its own international incident.

Opening June 24, Murder at the Match: 2026 World Cup Edition is an original interactive comedy mystery inspired by the world's biggest sporting event. Featuring rival nations, oversized egos, suspicious officials, and one very inconvenient murder, the production transforms World Cup fever into an evening of laughter, intrigue, and audience participation.

Audiences may remember Diego Marrydora, the Canadian soccer legend whose untimely demise delighted audiences in Globus Theatre's 2022 World Cup mystery set in Qatar. Now, as the FIFA World Cup returns and Canada hosts the tournament for the first time, Murder at the Match: 2026 World Cup Edition features an entirely new mystery, fresh suspects, familiar faces, and plenty of international chaos.

The 2026 World Cup—an electrifying, history-making tournament spanning Canada, the United States, and Mexico—should be a celebration of unity, talent, and the beloved sport. But with scheming managers, spotlight-hungry influencers, over-pressured superstars, and sports officials juggling international egos, the hunt for goals and glory quickly spirals into red-card-worthy disaster. When one key player doesn’t make it to kickoff, suspicion erupts across three countries.  Suddenly, every border crossing hides a clue, and every match hides a motive. One thing is clear: someone wants to take the trophy… by eliminating the competition.

“What I love about creating these murder mysteries is the chance to capture a specific moment in time and build an entirely new story around it. Back in 2022, our World Cup mystery focused on Canada’s long-awaited return to the tournament after 36 years. In 2026, the excitement feels even bigger, with Canada stepping onto the world stage not only as a competitor, but as one of the host nations for this historic tri-national event.” - Sarah Quick, Artistic Director.

Audiences are encouraged to come in costume or pick a country to support and dress in those colours. They will enjoy canapes as they arrive and get introduced to the main characters. Action takes place as audiences are seated cabaret style, and dinner is a fabulous buffet with lots of delectable choices, featuring cuisine from all three host countries Canada, America and Mexico! Everyone has an opportunity to get involved and turn detective or just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! This fun-filled night of camaraderie and intrigue stars audience favourite Jennine Profeta (Girls Night Out), Canadian Comedy Award Winner Kerry Griffin (Schitt’s Creek, Murdoch Mysteries, Slaphappy), alongside returning Globus actors Allan Cooke (Do You Take This Man?), Mallory Brumm (Buying the Farm), with newcomer to the Globus Theatre stage, Kyle Claeys (Galatea; Shakespeare BASH'd, Comedy Bar Danforth).

“As an avid soccer fan, I’ve loved watching how the World Cup brings people together across Canada’s wonderfully diverse communities. We’re excited to give audiences a chance to celebrate the energy of the 2026 World Cup while enjoying an evening full of laughs, surprises, and a little patriotic spirit!” - Sarah Quick, Artistic Director.
