Osprey Heritage Awards Nominations now open

Nominations for the City of Kawartha Lakes Municipal Heritage Committee’s Osprey Heritage Awards are now open until November 1, 2023.

The Osprey Heritage Awards celebrate outstanding projects and contributions that have promoted and preserved community heritage within Kawartha Lakes.

The awards are back for the first time since 2018, having been on pause due to the pandemic. The 2023 Osprey Heritage Awards will serve as a 'catch-up' year, acknowledging projects and contributions spanning from 2019 to 2023. This extended eligibility period reflects the remarkable efforts that have continued to shape our community's heritage despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. Moving forward, these awards will follow a bi-annual schedule, alternating with the Doors Open program.

The awards will be presented in three distinct categories:

  1. Publication and Research Award: Non-fiction work about Kawartha Lakes archeological, built, cultural and/or natural heritage. Examples include exhibits, books, articles, and more.

  2. Community Heritage Award: A volunteer-based organization or individual that promotes and/or protects heritage in Kawartha Lakes.

  3. Heritage Restoration/Adaptive Reuse Award: Property owners—both residential and business—who have demonstrated a commitment to heritage preservation in one of these areas:

  • preservation work that protects, maintains and stabilizes the original form, material and integrity of a historic place;

  • rehabilitation work involving sensitive adaptation of an historic place or individual component for a continuing or compatible contemporary use;

  • restoration work that reveals, recovers or represents the state of an historic place or individual component as it appeared at a particular period in its history;

  • property and buildings well maintained.

Nomination submissions must be received by November 1, 2023. The award recipients will be chosen by a panel of judges, including members of the Municipal Heritage Committee and the Outreach Subcommittee. Award recipients and their nominators will be contacted no later than November 29, 2023, with a letter of congratulation and details of awards reception.
