Hello again from your Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society!
After this past week of wonderful, Spring weather, all gardeners and future gardeners are getting excited for the 2021 season to begin!
Communities In Bloom has designated 2021 as a year to plant the seeds of Hope - Hope for a Covid-free future, for a return to “normal”, for good health and an end to all the isolation of the past year. Think YELLOW! Yellow is the colour of “Hope” and . . .
Everyone across Canada is being encouraged to plant a "HOPE Garden" in 2021, no matter how small or large! What a perfect theme for a pandemic year where we are all hoping for a way back to our pre-Covid lives. The goal is to see communities full of gardens featuring the colour YELLOW, the international colour of Hope!
The "HOPE IS GROWING" campaign starts with planting seeds - - anywhere you can - - front yards, back yards, baskets and planters.
"Wherever there's an empty space, there is room for a plant.”
Just think YELLOW! Think of flowers, fruits, vegetables, shrubs; and plant as many kinds of seeds as you can in your Hope Garden.
Some suggestions for yellow vegetables from seed are Golden Delight zucchini, Yellow Beans, squashes, Golden Beets, Pumpkins, Yellow Peppers and, of course, Corn! Possible yellow flowers you could grow from seed are Calendula (Marigolds), Teddy Bear Sunflowers (or the classic “Mammoth"), Potentilla (Cinquefoils), Yellow snapdragons. The “Bees Knees” petunias, Coco Yellow dahlias, Black-Eyed Susans (rudbeckia hirta), Yellow Zinnias ("Double Zahara", “Magellan”, “Profusion”, etc.) or the tough, rugged Barren Strawberry ground cover. The list of yellow flower seeds for Hope Gardens is endless! And in the fall, don’t forget to plant daffodils and crocus for a beautiful showing next Spring!
