Lassi
Yield: 1 drink
Yes, ”lassi,” and I’m obsessed! If you’re not familiar with this traditional yogurt-based drink from North India, well soon you will be. Lassi has the potential to replace the smoothie market. There are health benefits linked to traditional lassi: it’s used as an overall tonic, it acts as a digestive aid, can help promote a healthy gut, cools the body in hot weather, and prevents heat exhaustion.
If you like yogurt then you’ll love this fun beverage! It’s instantly refreshing and there are many delicious flavors. Lassi can be sweet or salty, with savory or fruity additions. Fresh mango lassi is a favorite and is served at our own Lotus Indian Bistro in downtown Fenelon. Serve lassi for breakfast, lunch, as a mid-morning or afternoon snack, or as a digestive aid with any meal. I’m quite sure you’ll soon have fun coming up with your own seasonal flavor combinations.
The Basic Lassi:
1 cup cold plain whole milk yogurt
1 teaspoons sugar, or up to 2 tablespoons (local honey is my sweetner of choice)
½ cup cold water
4 ice cubes
¼ teaspoon of sea salt, or to taste
Method:
Add all the ingredients to a blender, or a medium bowl.
Puree or whisk until smooth and frothy (a cocktail shaker could work, or a medium bowl if employing basic recipe).
Taste and adjust seasoning.
Garnish.
Serve immediately!
Variations:
Peach Lassi—add + 2 peaches, skins removed and cubed + 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom.
Mint Lassi—add 1/4 cup fresh mint + 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice.
Apricot Lassi—add 2 apricots, skins removed and cubed + 1 teaspoon orange zest + 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice + 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
