Grade 13 Class of 1970 Reunion
Submitted by Heather LeCraw
Over the weekend of June 10-12, 2022 60 people will gather in Fenelon Falls to celebrate 52 years since our graduation from Grade 13. We’re looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. Planned events include a round of golf, a bicycle ride and a walk on the rail trail, 8-ball tournament, Meet & Greet, a Banquet with live music (provided by our own classmates) and a Goodbye Brunch. There will be ample free time to shop and dine, explore the local attractions, and enjoy the new downtown area and waterfront – so much has changed!
This homecoming was originally planned for 2020 – 50 years since our graduation from Fenelon Falls Secondary School. Then due to Covid, as with many events world-wide, it was postponed not once, but twice. Thanks to modern technology (email and social media) we were able to track down all but a handful of former classmates and hold regular planning meetings over Zoom. Many former classmates have not seen each other since 1970. Attendees are travelling from across Canada: Yukon, B.C, Alberta and all over Ontario, to reconvene in Fenelon Falls.
In the intervening years since 1970 there have been changes! Grade 13 doesn’t even exist anymore in our school system – morphing into OAC, and then gone altogether. When our class entered grade 9 in 1965 the school was called Fenelon Falls District High School, and it was much smaller than the building we see today.
Reunions. What’s the big deal? Have you ever attended a class reunion? For some, it’s a dreaded date to avoid at all costs; for others, it’s a highly anticipated event stirring up good memories and excitement about reconnecting with friends from the past. Google “why attend a class reunion” and see the common responses that come up:
To reconnect with friends
To satisfy curiosity about what became of so-and-so
To reminisce about old times, shared experiences
To party with people our own age, and rock to music from decades ago
To celebrate successes and changes
To share with a spouse or partner where we came from, and who was part of our formative years
To honour and remember those who have passed
To make new memories
I suspect our Class of 1970 mates identify with most of the reasons on the list. One thing is certain - after 3 years of planning, the weekend of June 10-12 will go down in our personal history as a momentous occasion! Please help us welcome our returning grads of FFSS.
