Proposed Clifton St Pedestrian Bridge
The Fenelon Falls and District Chamber of Commerce Waterfront Improvement Committee, in partnership with the City of Kawartha Lakes, is currently investigating the feasibility of constructing a single span pedestrian bridge over the Fenelon River roughly in alignment with Clifton Street. Contractors have been retained to clear brush, do geotechnical investigation, prepare a preliminary site plan, assess bridge abutment requirements, and otherwise determine the viability of a bridge.
It is proposed that the bridge land on the north side of the gorge in Clifton Park, in alignment with the north extension of Clifton Street. On the south side of the gorge it is proposed that the bridge land on City-owned land somewhat to the west of the southern extension of Clifton Street in order to avoid the overhead power lines during crane lifting. The southern landing would then be connected to the southern extension of Clifton Street by crossing City-owned land. There will be no piers in the water.
This investigative phase of the project will take several months. If and when it is determined that the project is feasible, construction contracts will be prepared for site work and bridge construction.
The project is being financed by revenue derived from the hydro plant. The power plant revenue must be spent on improvements in and around the waterway. It is anticipated that there will be no tax dollars spent on this project.
This proposed pedestrian bridge will be a great addition to Fenelon. It will allow for a second route across the river, allowing citizens to avoid the busy main bridge. It will be available for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, consistent with the evolving emphasis on active transportation in the City. Overall it will be of significant benefit to the community
