Ask a Designer! What Are Some Tips for Organizing My Closet?
It’s February and you don’t have better things to do! What could be better than getting ready for spring with a closet glow-up?! Our designers have a lot to say about how to get you started.
If you haven’t heard of the 80/20 wardrobe rule, let us enlighten you. You wear 20% of your wardrobe 80% of the time. Do we need to say more? Once you let that sink in, run don’t walk to get boxes, bags whatever you will need to minimize and optimize your wardrobe space!
This closet concept for a Home by Tim + Chris project acts as a runway between bedroom and ensuite creating a spacious and integrated closet space.
Make Space
To set yourself up for success, first make a wide-open space to start hauling everything out of your closet. You will need an area to start piles of “keep” or “donate.” Having a zone to work in is important so you can see absolutely everything in one place. Once you have removed everything from your closet, you can deep clean the space and start to think about what you really want to put back into that clean, fresh space!
Thoughtful Curation
The true art of closet organization is about thoughtful curation. Keeping your best and favourite things and being purposeful about exactly what those items are is important. Next you will want to categorize items. Some people like to organize by colour, seasonal wear or depending on the size of your closet space, by type of outfit and daily routine. Having workout gear in one place and sleep wear in another makes for easy and efficient access. Folding items is also an easy way to see outfit options without having to spend too much time looking.
A Reflection of Your Style
Your closet is the same as any other room in your home. Putting your style stamp on it is a way to energize and inject your personality into a space that you literally use multiple times each day. By taking a thoughtful approach, you will also spend more time keeping your wardrobe organized. It will become a space with a purpose that works to help you save time and find joy in your everyday lifestyle.
Accessories and Organizers
Investing in quality hangers will help preserve the quality and integrity of items like knitwear, high end items and clothes that can quickly otherwise lose their shape. There are many products available on the market to help with specific items like sunglasses, hats and purses. Giving each item its own personal home is going to save money in the long run as you will know where everything is located and won’t purchase duplicates.

Look Up Way Up
Vertical organization is an ideal way to store seasonal items in bins, handbags, shoes and other items that can fit in cubby holes. One can find such beautiful storage solutions on the market and you can search for what matches your personal style and feel of your overall home. Having flow from the other rooms in your home or cottage, that lead into your wardrobe space is one way to ensure a consistent and organized approach to your overall lifestyle. We are pretty sure that this concept of closet organization can carry over in to your other living spaces.

Organizing your closet is a personal thing. Curate your space for your needs and daily habits. We all have routines and our wardrobe is one way of making those early mornings and late nights more manageable. Keeping only what we need is a good mantra to subscribe to. Quality over quantity is another one that we adhere to as generally those will be the items you wear the most. Consider built-ins and closet systems that optimize your space and also reflect your taste and style. We guarantee you will want to repeat this exercise with all your closets! While it’s messy outside, make it organized inside!
