Globus Theatre is Assembling a Community Choir for its 2025 Season Opening Production

Kawartha Lakes singers of all ages and abilities will be pleased to learn that Globus Theatre is putting together a community choir to perform with their opening mainstage show: Desperate to be Doris in late May.

Encouraging community involvement has always been important to Globus Theatre, and over the years they have run several community programs including the Youth Winter Arts Program, Downtown Detective Trails, and the Holiday Pantos which combine professional company with local community members. In keeping with this tradition, Globus is extending an invite to local singers to join their community choir which will play an integral role in Desperate to be Doris.

An Oxford University study found that group singing creates strong social bonds "which is particularly valuable in today’s often alienating world” (Launay & Pearce). The creation of a new community choir program is especially important since the Bobcaygeon Choristers were unfortunately disbanded during the pandemic.

Globus' chosen production, Desperate to be Doris, initially toured in England and had a main cast of professional actors but featured different local choirs at their various destinations. Globus is honoured to be hosting its Canadian premiere.

Like the original English show, Globus' main cast is comprised of professional actors. But, the choir is an integral part of the production and will be required to learn simple choreography and wear costumes.

Artistic Director Sarah Quick is very excited about the new program. She says, "my hope is for this choir to be intergenerational—having seniors and children and everyone in-between singing alongside each other...everyone can bond through the uplifting music of Doris Day!"

Any and all singers are encouraged to sign up for the community choir at Globus. Experienced singers will be given a chance to shine, while beginners will gain valuable experience. Quick assures that, "we will have a place for everyone!'' Desperate to be Doris will kick off Globus Theatre's professional season on May 29th 2025.

Rehearsals will take place once a week through March and April, moving to twice a week come May—the time and day will be based on member availability. Those interested in joining can find more information and sign themselves up online at globustheatre.com or call us at 705 738 2037.
