Soroptimist Supports Career Planning for Girls through Dream it, Be it

Nineteen girls in grades 9 and 10 at I. E. Weldon Secondary School spent May 1st thinking about their futures and possible careers.

It was all part of the Dream it, Be it: Career Planning for Girls Program hosted by Soroptimist International of Kawartha Lakes. Designed specifically for girls in secondary school, Dream It, Be It provides participants with career support and guidance. Through education and access to role models, the program aims to empower girls to pursue career goals and reach their full potential. This was the third year that Soroptimist has hosted the program at I. E. Weldon working closely with staff in the school’s Student Services department to put the event together.

Keynote speaker Amy Terrill, Executive Director of BGC Kawarthas, talked about the transitions she experienced throughout her career and how to identify and adapt your skills to new opportunities. Later, a panel of local women told the girls about their respective jobs and their journeys to success. The panel included an entrepreneur, a professional photographer, a Canada Border Services officer, and a funeral director.

In addition, the girls participated in sessions designed to help them explore potential careers based on their personal values and to learn how to set achievable goals, a skill that can be applied to both their personal lives as well their future professional lives.

The day also included guidance from a mental health professional on maintaining mental wellness and a presentation on ways to finance post-secondary education.

A registered charity, Soroptimist International of Kawartha Lakes raises funds through different fundraising activities throughout the year to support programs like Dream It, Be It. New members are always welcomed.
