Unmasking Mental Health: Kawartha Lakes focuses on openness during Mental Health Week

Kawartha Lakes – Mental Health Week 2025 is this week, May 5 to 11. People in Kawartha Lakes are joining others across Canada to talk about mental health. This year, the theme is "Unmasking Mental Health." We want to look at how hiding our feelings and staying silent can hurt people who have mental health or substance use problems. It's hard to live with a mental illness. But it's even harder when you feel like you have to hide it. People often put on a "mask" to avoid being judged. They might hide how they really feel, force a smile, or say "I'm fine" when they're not. This can make people feel very alone.

During Mental Health Week, people in Ontario will work together to break down these barriers. We want to encourage everyone to be open and honest. When we truly see each other, we can build real connections that help us heal and feel better together.

Mental Health Affects Many

Mental illness is common in Canada:

  • About 1 in 5 Canadians will have a mental health problem in their life.

  • By age 40, about half of all Canadians will have had a mental illness.

  • Mental illness can affect anyone, no matter their age, background, or how much money they make.

  • It can be even harder for people facing racism, poverty, and other challenges.

Because mental health is so important, Mental Health Week is a key time to learn, connect, and support each other.

What is Empathy?

Empathy means understanding how someone else feels. It's not about fixing their problems. It's about listening to them without judging and trying to see things from their point of view.

  • You can understand how someone feels, even if you don't agree with what they are going through.

  • You can listen without trying to give advice.

  • You can show you care through your words and actions.

Empathy helps to "unmask" mental health and reduces stigma.

Take Time for Yourself

Mental Health Week is about taking action. Think about the small things that help you feel good. Maybe it's spending time in nature, being with people you care about, doing a hobby, or enjoying a quiet moment.

Take some time this week to focus on the things that support your mental health.

Where to Find Help

  • ConnexOntario: This service provides free and confidential information about health services for people with health issues. You can reach them 24/7 at 1-866-531-2600.

  • Ontario.ca/mentalhealth: The Ontario government website has information on mental health services and support.

  • CMHA Ontario: The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Ontario Division, offers many resources and programs.

Let's all work together to create a community in Ontario where people feel safe talking about mental health.
