Earthing: A Simple Practice for Better Sleep and Well-Being

As a certified fitness, life and nutrition coach I have been studying and researching the key pillars of health for decades.  My research and practical success stories have focused on the following key areas: Exercise, proper nutrition, sleep, and stress management. While all pillars of health are crucial, I would argue that sleep is the foundation upon which the others rely. Without adequate, quality sleep, we often feel too fatigued to exercise, crave unhealthy foods, experience higher stress levels, and fall into a negative cycle of poor rest.

This article is about new findings that support the foundational pillar of “sleep.”

In the pursuit of better sleep, people have turned to a wide range of solutions, from advanced sleep trackers and high-tech mattresses to pharmaceutical aids. Yet, one ancient and natural practice has recently captured my interest: earthing, also known as grounding. The concept is straightforward—reconnecting our bodies with the earth’s natural electrical energy to improve sleep, reduce inflammation, and promote overall health. Based on the research I've studied and the results I've observed, earthing has shown significant potential.

I first heard about earthing years ago from a fitness colleague, but I didn’t pay it much attention. It sounded a bit too “woo woo” for me. But early this summer when my hairdresser told me she was sleeping on an “earthing sheet” and that it had very quickly helped her sleep better, eased her pain, and reduced her joint stiffness, I was intrigued. I decided to do some research on the power of “grounding” and give it a try. Throughout the summer, I read published and peer-reviewed books and articles and I actually started walking barefoot outside as often as possible, enjoying the feeling of being more connected to nature. At first, I wasn’t sure it was doing much, but being outside barefoot felt great. That was enough motivation to keep going.

I decided to get an earthing sheet for myself. It wasn’t a lot of money, and it might really help me!  And, if it worked for me, I would be able to recommend it to my clients. I also wanted to do something to help my 88-year-old mother. My mom has been an insomniac for most of her life. There are countless self-help books about sleep on her bookshelves. So, I ordered an earthing sheet for her too.

We’ve both been sleeping on earthing sheets for about 2 months now. Mom is amazed at how deeply she can sleep - and is very grateful! She gets 5 to 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep on a regular basis, and she’s sometimes even able to go back to sleep for a couple more hours to get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night. It has made such a remarkable difference in her life! The same goes for me! I regularly sleep 7 to 8 hours a night with no interruptions. It is truly life-changing!

Here’s a list of the key benefits of quality sleep:

  1. Improved Cognitive Function: Enhances memory, focus, and problem-solving abilities.

  2. Better Mood: Promotes emotional stability and reduces irritability and stress.

  3. Increased Energy Levels: Restores physical energy, leading to greater productivity and stamina.

  4. Enhanced Immune System: Strengthens the body's ability to fight infections and illnesses.

  5. Faster Recovery: Supports muscle repair and growth, especially after exercise or injury.

  6. Balanced Hormones: Regulates appetite-related hormones, helping to control hunger and cravings.

  7. Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases: Lowers the chances of heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
