Extended Heat Warning Alert Issued for the County of Haliburton,City of Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland County

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit (HKPR District Health Unit) is informing the County of Haliburton, City of Kawartha Lakes, and Northumberland County that an Extended Heat Warning has been issued by Environment Canada due to a prolonged heat event lasting until the weekend.

Dangerous hot and humid conditions are expected to clear by Friday for the City of Kawartha Lakes and the County of Haliburton, while lasting until Saturday for Northumberland County. Stay up to date on changing weather conditions and monitor active heat advisories by signing up for local weather alerts.

Heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke can be very dangerous, especially to those most vulnerable to health risks including people who work outdoors, people who are unhoused, elderly and some people with disabilities or chronic diseases, people who are pregnant, and children and infants. Monitor yourself and those around you for signs of heat-related illness and seek medical attention if required.

To help reduce your risk of heat-related illnesses during an extreme heat warning, ensure you drink lots of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty and try to spend time in an air-conditioned home or public building, such as a shopping mall, library or community centre. Contact your local municipality to ask about designated public cooling centres.

Special Air Quality Statement - Termination
The HKPR District Health Unit is also advising that the Special Air Quality Statement issued on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 for the City of Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland County has ended as a result of Environment Canada determining elevated pollution levels are no longer expected or have moved out of the area.
