Haliburton Kawartha Maple Syrup First Tapping

A sure sign that spring is just about ready to shrug winter off its shoulders in this part of the world is the arrival of the maple syrup season. On Saturday, March 2nd, local maple syrup producers herald the coming of the season with their ceremonial First Tapping at Schalk Maple Farm, home of Hungry Bear Maple Syrup and the Schalk Family.

Though the date of the first sap run is unpredictable, First Tapping is scheduled for just before it is likely to begin so that members of the Haliburton-Kawartha Maple Syrup Producers Association can get away from their bushes to share in the celebration. Our Local association encompasses 50 members from Durham Region and the City of Kawartha Lakes plus the counties of Haliburton and Peterborough. It is a large area that covers many diverse climates and terrain that makes for a different tasting maple syrup from each of our producers. Come on out on March 2nd to see what Schalk family have to offer.

Of course, you don’t have to be a member to take part in the festivities the event is open to the public. Fans of maple may gather at Schalk Maple Farm at 11:00 am for a ceremonial tapping before visiting the sugar shack for hot drinks and a light lunch plus maybe some maple treats. Visitors can go for a walk in the bush and ask all the questions they want.

The Schalk Maple Farm is located at 86 Martins Rd. Fenelon Falls Ontario just east of town between county 8 & 37.
