Have You Seen The Planting At The Farmers Market?
A Downtown Revitalization Initiative
154 native shrubs were planted bordering the creek at the farmers market (Bond & John Streets) to rehabilitate the site and filter runoff. This border measures 500 x 10 feet.
Kawartha Works Community Coop, with permission from the City of Kawartha Lakes, received a grant from Kawartha Conservation for this project. First, W G Jackett & Sons Construction Ltd. prepared the site and added a thick layer of mulch after the planting was completed to retain moisture.
The native shrubs from Grow Wild native plant nursery in Omemee are red- osier dogwood, serviceberry, smooth rose, purple flowering raspberry and black chokeberry. Their long roots will filter runoff and pollutants, especially from the huge piles of snow, before entering the creek.
Keep watching as the shrubs grow and fill in this border with beneficial and attractive flowers and berries, too.
