Remembering the Tragedy on Balsam Lake 100 Years Later

One of the worst tragedies in the area occurred on Balsam Lake.

Ten youths and a camp leader drowned on July 20, 1926, after a canoe capsized in a stormy wind.

At the Balsam Lake Association meeting on Saturday, July 11, local historian Doug Paterson will talk about the tragic event—how it happened, the impact on the community and lessons for now.

Most of the boys were from Toronto, and a monument in St James Cemetery has been recently restored. There is also a plaque at the Kirkfield Historical Museum.
