Volunteering as Part of Healthy Aging

As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.~ Audrey Hepburn

On Feb. 15, the Fenelon Seniors Centre is presenting Healthy Aging; Embracing a Dynamic Lifestyle. A panel of health professionals and experts will discuss various factors in healthy aging.
How can we embrace a dynamic lifestyle? The Oxford Languages dictionary defines dynamic as

  1. (of a process or system) characterized by constant change, activity, or progress.

  2. (of a person) positive in attitude and full of energy and new ideas.

We can look at our daily and weekly life and search out opportunities to introduce some change, progress and new ideas. How would you rate yourself in terms of a positive attitude? Are you energetic and optimistic as you greet your day each morning?
Our community of Fenelon Falls and the wider area of Kawartha Lakes is strongly supported by the generosity, kindness and caring of volunteers. They are everywhere – sometimes in the spotlight, and more often, behind the scenes. They work diligently and with dedication to provide beauty (Horticulture Society), fun events (Santa Day), sports and social events (Curling & Tennis Clubs), fellowship (our many churches), culture (Kawartha Arts Festival) and multi-generational activities (baseball, hockey, Grannies for Grannies) to name only a few. There are so many more!
The Fenelon Seniors Centre offers social, fitness, cultural and educational events. And there are many ways to engage – as a participant and as a volunteer. It’s a win-win.
Did you know that volunteer opportunities for seniors have many benefits to a person who serves? This is especially true for older adults who spend their time giving back. Research has shown that some of the benefits of volunteering for older adults can include:

  • Improves mental health

  • Helps to prevent loneliness and isolation

  • Helps to develop a feeling of purpose

  • Meet new friends and feel a part of the community

  • Can increase physical activity

  • Share your talents and learn new skills
