What Is Legacy Chest?

Musicathon 2017 The Abernethys, Sandy and Shirley. (Now sadly, passed)

Sounds like a treasure hunt doesn’t it? Or maybe like Community CHEST in Monopoly. There is even an on line video game called Legacy Chest.

The Legacy CHEST I want to tell you about is a hidden treasure right here in our city of Kawartha Lakes. “The Legacy C.H.E.S.T. fund provides financial assistance to non-profit, community- based organizations that provide programs, projects or activities that enhance the quality of life for residents in the areas of health, arts, culture, leisure, heritage, education and environment.” The Fenelon Falls Grannies for Grannies are lucky recipients of a grant this year.  It was granted under the heading of Arts and Culture because the Granny Musicathon which occurs on Saturday April 6 at St. James Anglican church is a show case for over one hundred local musicians.

Fenelon Falls Grannies For Grannies are grateful to the City of Kawartha Lakes and especially to LeAnne Donnelly who guided us through the application process and to Mike Perry, our local councilor who supported the application and moved the motion. Our mayor, Doug Elmslie will attend and bring greetings from the City.

The grant process is quite stringent. Lots of paperwork! Appendices A, B, C and careful financial accounting following the event. A lot of work and planning went into the event. But the audience won’t see the work. They won’t see the planning. They will just enjoy! The program includes wonderful music, many different genres, the Kawartha Male Chorus, local singer song writer Trevor Hutchinson, the reunion choir, vocalists with piano or guitar, keyboard and country folk music.

Of special interest is an African drum circle and the audience is invited to join in! Also, the Musicathon will be presenting Fiddles and Friends, a true Canadian tradition with dancing!  Experience it all:  from a sweet little piano student, to a keyboard rocking out the rock n’ roll tunes, to a harpist.  Plan to spend the day. It is six hours of continuous music. From 10 am to 4:30 pm at St. James Anglican Church, 7 Bond St. East in Fenelon Falls. Refreshments are available. Admission is by donation to the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Grandmothers Campaign.
