XACT Kawartha Sun Run Returns
On Sunday, June 14th, about 800 runners will gather at Garnet Graham Beach Park for the second annual XACT Kawartha Sun Run, choosing from a half marathon, 10K, or 5K route along the Victoria Rail Trail. Sponsored by XACT Nutrition and presented by CL Performance Training, the race will feature many local runners, including several defending their podium spots.
“Last year’s weather gave us an extraordinarily hot and humid day for the race,” explains co-race director Cindy Lewis of Endurance Event Productions. “We adapted by changing the course last minute, but this year we plan to use the course as originally intended.”
The race starts and finishes at Garnet Graham Beach Park and follows the Victoria Rail Trail north along Cameron Lake, turning back about 500 meters beyond Somerville Concession Road #3. Aid stations along the route will be serving hydration and some energy bars provided by XACT Nutrition. The 5K turn will be located just north of Thorn St., and the 10k turn around will be located just past the Northline Road crossing. Spectators along the route are encouraged to cheer the runners on.
Runners are attracted to the race for the fast and flat course and to enjoy the beauty and hospitality of Fenelon Falls. Although the race primarily draws participants from across Ontario, there will be visitors from the US and from the UK at this year’s event.
Many volunteers are needed to help on race day as course marshals and at the aid stations. Residents who are available on Sunday morning to volunteer are encouraged to check the available positions at this link or email eepvolunteercoordinator@gmail.com.
High school students looking to fulfill their volunteer hours are especially welcome!
“It takes a lot of people to ensure a running race is safe and fun,” says co-race director Sandie Orlando. “Organizers rely on their course and medical crew, but volunteers are equally important.”
Start time is 7:30 am, and the course closes at 11:00 am. Walkers are welcome; however, strollers and dogs are not permitted.
Endurance Event Productions offers four races each season:
Georgina Spring Fling (May 3); Kawartha Sun Run (June 14); Georgina Marathon (September 13); Oakville 21.1 (October 4).
