Be Proud of Your Age

Regardless of how old you are, take today to celebrate National Seniors’ Day. To those of you over 65, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your contributions. You laid the foundation to build the country we enjoy today, and we appreciate it!
So how can you ensure that you stay safe and healthy to enjoy many more celebrations in the years to come? Of course, at this difficult time, continue to protect yourself from COVID. Check updates to ensure you are following the most current guidelines, continue to practice good hand hygiene and social distancing and wear a mask when required.
Certainly, this year more than ever, make sure to get your flu shot. Whilst it will not protect you against COVID, at the least, not having the flu will prevent you from having symptoms which may prompt the need for COVID testing; and more importantly, if you did contract COVID, the last thing you would want is to have the flu at the same time. So be sure to get your shot, vaccines will start being made available this month at your local pharmacy or primary care provider’s office.
Of course as always, as we approach the colder season, be aware of what that means to your health and safety. Remain mindful of slip hazards, not only on the ice but also on wet leaves and decking. Recognize the effort associated with raking and use a leaf blower or ask a friend to help; and when the snow does fly, be mindful of the effort required to clear even small areas. Be honest with yourself and ask for help if you feel that your fall or winter chores will be an overexertion.
And for those of us who have not yet reached 65? Take this day to show your appreciation and thank a senior in your life. Better yet, offer your assistance with those chores that may prove too much for a neighbour or a loved one – they deserve our help and recognition.
So take care of each other today and always.
