Books & Brews Event Series Launches This Month
Submitted by Dana Deathe
On Friday, March 13th, The Book Lady and Fenelon Falls Brewing Co. are joining forces to bring you the first Books & Brews event featuring local author David Ward.
David has written two books published by ECW Press. His first book, The Lost 10 Point Night: Searching for my Hockey Hero, Jim Harrison tells the story of David’s pursuit to interview his favourite hockey player from his childhood. As David builds his friendship with former Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Jim Harrison, the story shifts to reveal insider information about the history of the NHL, including the merger with the WHA that changed the league forever, and the ways that the NHLPA affects past and current hockey players as they give their all to play Canada’s national winter sport in the big leagues.
In his second book, Bay of Hope: Five Years in Newfoundland, follow David to the isolated outport of McCallum, Newfoundland, where he recounts what it’s like to live in a remote coastal community with a population of less than 100 people. David recounts grappling with feelings of loneliness and strives to be useful to his neighbours, as helping each other out becomes a way of life there. Underpinning David’s memoir is a story about how the Newfoundland government has attempted to sway people to move away from these outports and how the presented options for residents can cause friction in communities where some people have lived their entire lives.
On Friday, March 13th at 6:00 pm, join The Book Lady at the Fenelon Falls Brewing Co. for a fun Q&A with Fenelon’s local writer-in-residence. Both of David’s excellent books are currently available at The Book Lady, and some copies will also be available to purchase at the event. We hope to see you there!
