Welcome to The Garden Project!
Submitted by Maddy Warlow
As we all know, Fenelon Falls is filled with beautiful gardens. From the Beach Park all the way across to Lindsay Street, and many places in between, you can find yourself admiring them, small and large! But have you ever walked by the beautiful gardens in downtown Fenelon Falls and wondered who creates and maintains these gardens?
Meet Laurie Jones and her dedicated team of gardening volunteers! You may see them working hard on a Monday or Thursday creating magic in over 22 gardens around town. If you do, be sure to say hello!
Laurie has been part of the Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society for 7 years and has filled the role of Lead Gardener for 6 years. She thinks of these gardens as if they were her own. Long before any shovel hits the ground in the Spring, Laurie spends countless hours planning and sorting through what should be done in each garden for the coming year.
“There is a lot of planning that goes into the gardens but I could not do the job without the dependable and knowledgeable volunteers on the garden team who show up at least twice a week to get the jobs done,” says Laurie of her hardworking team!
The Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society has existed for over 100 years and has cultivated and designed a number of gardens throughout its history, many of which we adore today! Over the next couple of months, The Garden Project will be highlighting these beautiful spaces that call Fenelon Falls home and make us even more proud to live here! So, follow along, and don’t get lost along the way!
The FFHS has decided to pursue a number of initiatives to ensure as many people as possible are able to enjoy the gardens in a variety of ways. In the coming months, the FFHS will showcase the gardens with articles and photos in their newsletter, on their website as well as in the Town Crier. The FFHS is excited about new partnership opportunities to showcase the gardens through a Walking Tour featured in the Driftscape app as facilitated by Marylee Boston and team at the Chamber, as well as a Virtual Garden Tour headed by Sharon and Glen Walker at the Maryboro Lodge!
As the gardens brighten and beautify the community, we want the community to be part of beautifying this project! Do you have a favourite garden around town, or perhaps a fond memory of time spent among the beautiful flowers and blooms? We would love to hear from you!
