Deadline Extended for The Royal Canadian Legion Fenelon Falls Literary Contest for Seniors
Submitted by Arlene Coleman
We hope all our seniors in the wider community of Fenelon Falls are coping as well as can be expected during these uncertain times of COVID-19. When we introduced our second Literary Contest for Seniors earlier in the year, open to those 55 years plus in the community, one could never imagine the circumstances that reflect our “new normal” just a few short months later. Submissions will be accepted from residents of Fenelon Falls and vicinity. We have extended the submission deadline to 6:00pm September 25, 2020.

Fenelon Falls Curling Club finds a way to help out during this pandemic
Submitted by Shirley Hackett of the Fenelon Falls Curling Club
Everyone deals with Covid 19 in their own way. To help out at this time Fenelon Falls Curling Club offered to lend a hand. So when a customer could not shop for themselves in the store nor leave their home for safety reasons, a volunteer list was offered to Sobeys and groceries delivered with safe protocols.

The Caring and Connecting Kawartha Lakes Initiative
Submitted by Caleb Kim
Want to lend a helping hand in your community while practicing social distancing? Retirement and long-term care homes in Ontario have been on lockdown for quite some time now. This means that, unlike a lot of us, many residents haven't been able to have any family and friends visit, which can make this an incredibly lonely and depressing time.

Balsam Lake Jump in the Lake Challenge
Submitted by Barb Young. Photo by Kathrine Potter.
There were some exciting things happening around Balsam Lake today despite this rotten virus. Dean Michel and his wife from Balsam's North Bay initiated a "jump in the lake challenge" to raise money for the Coboconk Food Bank which was experiencing shortages because of the virus. Barb Young from Rosedale took on the challenge and raised approx. $1500.00 for the food bank.

MPP Laurie Scott Hosted Virtual Roundtable
Submitted by the office of Laurie Scott, MPP
It’s a sign of the times. Two months ago local Chambers of Commerce and other small businesses would have met in a local coffee shop, restaurant, boutique or other store to share ideas and concerns on what the province could do to help local business. Instead, the world has had to get creative.

Country Cupboard Giving Away 100 Trees for Earth Day
The good folks at Country Cupboard have started an annual tradition: every year, on Earth Day, they give away 100 trees that are ready to plant! There is no purchase necessary and the seedlings are only available while supplies last - first come, first served. The trees will be marked with their type and planting instructions, and they will be set out on the front porch of the Country Cupboard for contact-less pickup.

What Are You Missing?
Submitted by Marina Hodson
As I talk with friends and family, remotely of course, it is interesting to hear what it is people miss the most during these strange times. Of course, I often hear they “miss personal contact, visiting grandchildren, going to the office”, all of which are expected. What I find more interesting are the small things people miss and the most intriguing are the things they never thought they would miss!

Kawartha COVID-19 Response Team Mask Challenge
Submitted by Sandra Clements
The Kawartha COVID-19 Response Team would like to challenge the community of Kawartha Lakes to make 2020 masks in 20 days. We are getting requests for these masks on a daily basis. If you make them we can pick up and distribute to the groups that are requesting them. Please contact me if you are able to help, have masks ready for pick up or your community group or essential service requires masks. If you can help but need supplies we can help with that too. If you are sewing and already handing out to friends and neighbours - send me a message with your count and we will add to the tally too. Everyone’s support is greatly appreciated.
Here’s a link for the mask pattern: https://www.skiptomylou.org/face-mask-pattern/

Shopping Local is Fantastic!
Submitted by Shirley Hackett
With the closure of walk-in stores in Fenelon Falls, it takes some creativity to shop local...but we did! And the results are fantastic. The Butterfly Boutique and the Barn and Bunkie offered online shopping and Easter Bags as well as free delivery or arranged pick up. So we gave it a try for our Easter and were impressed by each store’s commitment to customer service. This morning I opened my Easter Bag and online purchases.

Social Distancing Cleaning
Submitted by Kathy Armstrong
Wondering what to do in this time of social distancing now that the house is organized and there are only sports re-runs on TV? Or what to do with the kids? How about cleaning up the roadsides when you are out for a walk? Don't worry, it's not crowded. Grab a pair of gloves and 3 bags and sort as you pick up - a bag each for beer cans, plastic recycling and garbage. Here's what we have collected on country roads in our neighbourhood.

Celebrate Easter at Home and Win!
This year we have had to make changes to our community Easter Eggstravaganza event. While we are all at home trying to make the best of our new situation, we wanted to help entertain you from the comfort of your living room. On Thursday, April 9th, an Easter-themed activity package will be released in the Town Crier!
We also want to encourage residents and businesses to put up a picture of an Easter Egg in this window for passers-by to see. We look forward to seeing what everyone creates! By posting your window eggs or activity package creations on Facebook or Instagram with #ExploreFenelonFalls, you are eligible to win one of five $25 gift certificates to a local business of your choice!
