A COVID Christmas at St. James Anglican

Submitted by Dana Bachman

Christmas will definitely be different this year. On November 28 the Santa Day committee was still able to come up with a way to create some holiday magic for children -- a drive by Santa! Children can still submit letters to Santa at the library and volunteers from our local post office will write responses. Are you longing for the candle lit Christmas Eve service? Or have you and your family attended the Bethlehem Live Christmas Eve service at St. James, complete with sheep, donkeys and the traditional Christmas pageant? Unfortunately those will not be happening this year, but there are still opportunities for you and your family to experience the message of hope and rebirth at Christmas. And we could all use a little hope right about now.

Fenelon Falls Got Heart

Submitted by Dana Bachman

Today, Saturday, November 28, was a beautiful sunny day. As I travelled around doing my errands in Fenelon Falls I was struck by what a big-hearted community we are. At Sobeys, a lady in a wheelchair was sitting beside the “Out” door collecting money for the Salvation Army. In a corner of the Sobeys parking lot, two young boys were waving plastic jugs of windshield washer fluid. Trentside Baptist church was offering windshield washer fluid fill up...for free! Not even asking for a donation.

Back to Basics

How many times have you heard the phrase “unprecedented times” over the past eight months? Well, you are about to hear it again. For most of my adult life, I have done things that I assumed to be common in most homes. I cook, bake bread, can, preserve and pressure cook; I know how to sew, knit, crochet and cross-stitch. Don’t ask me how I learned these skills, but I just thought we all picked them up along the way. As I got older and spoke to others, I came to realize that these were often considered antiquated and uncommon hobbies and skills – until now that is!

Play the "Lake Cameron" Puzzle

Submitted by Anne Kulmala

My sister and Step Mom made the trek to Fenelon Falls from Paris, Ontario late this summer. COVID could no longer keep them away as our family added 2 new members, one in June and one in August. 2 new babies, 2 new Grandchildren for me and new Great Grandchildren for Jean Kulmala, my Step Mom. We had a “distanced” visit and walked down along the beach with some of the kids. It was a beautiful windy day with sunlight sparkling off the waves and a perfect place to be able to meet. It reminded me just how fortunate we are to live in this beautiful playground we call Fenelon Falls. My sister Barbara MacDonald, has created an online puzzle of Cameron Lake from a photo she took at Garnet Graham Park. You are invited to enjoy the jigsaw puzzle at the following link: https://www.jigsawplanet.com/?rc=play&pid=0acf60940814

Tell us what you’re thankful for

Did you know that consciously naming what you are grateful for has real mental health benefits? Next week we will focus the Town Crier newsletter on being thankful.

What are you thankful for this year? Did a neighbour drop off groceries while you were isolating? Or maybe you are thankful for all the wonderful sunsets we saw this past summer. Send us a picture or a couple brief sentences to share what you’re most thankful for this season. Thankful submissions can be sent to: submissions@explorefenelonfalls.com.

Thanks in advance!
