Allen Wood Toy Products
Submitted by Ashleigh Picard - Tourism Ambassador
There is probably a good chance you grew up playing with a set of Tinker Toys. The wood circles and sticks are an icon in most Fenelon Falls childhood memories, as Tinker Toys were made right here in the Jewel of the Kawarthas. During the ’50s and ’60s, Allen Wood Products Ltd. operated near the waterfront, creating a variety of wooden toys including bowling, croquet, ring toss and the iconic Tinker Toys.

Note about Stone Piling
Submitted by Shirley McCormick
I love your e-news about Fenelon Falls; however, I thought it important to send an environmental note about people in Ontario making inukshuks / stone piles using stones nearby, whether especially in water but also on land. You posted a photo of one in the July 30th edition (#222) and I fear it will inspire others to do it, and also lend credibility to it as an ideal pastime. The intent is enjoyment and creativity, but unfortunately, it has environmental repercussions that can be quite damaging to wildlife.
Sleepless in Kawartha...
Submitted by Marina Hodson
As if COVID-19 has not wreaked enough havoc with our mental and physical health, it may also be impacting our sleep! I have personally never been one to suffer from insomnia, however, the combination of added stress and disrupted routine appears to have taken a toll on our sleep. It really should not come as a surprise to any of us; after all, lacking routine, working from home and setting our own schedules may tempt us into staying up late for some additional screen time or taking that mid-afternoon nap. Obviously that alone can disrupt our sleep patterns sufficiently, but then add the extra stress and anxiety about our health, money or loved ones and it is little wonder that sleep neurologists have coined the term COVID-somnia.
