Fight the Bite - Positive West Nile Virus Equine Test Result Brings Reminder For People to Take Precautions

With the first sign of West Nile virus being detected in the area this summer, local residents are being asked to cover up and clean up to avoid mosquitoes. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit reports that a horse in the City of Kawartha Lakes has tested positive for West Nile virus. The finding was confirmed in tests taken by a local veterinarian and then reported to the Health Unit this week. The horse was treated with antibiotics and is recovering.

Beware of Bats, As More Being Found Inside Area Homes

A worrying rise in the number of bats being reported in homes in the tri-county area is causing the local Health Unit to sound the alarm. In recent weeks, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit has received multiple reports of bats being discovered inside homes in Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes. While there have been no incidents of rabid bats biting people this year, the Health Unit is urging people to be on the lookout for bats in their homes and take steps to ‘bat-proof’ their residence.

Updated Chamber and Tourism Office Hours

As summer draws to a close it's time to say goodbye to Michael. His last day is tomorrow so the office will now be transitioning to our fall hours. The office will be closed on the following days: Monday, August 31st, Tuesday, September 1st, and Tuesday, September 8th.

Hours for the remainder of September will be Tues, Wed, Fri, Sat 10 am to 4 pm and Thurs 11:30 am to 4 pm to facilitate the KATVA pickups.

Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society Expands Rain Garden

What has happened to the garden at the end of Oak Street?

The Fenelon Falls Horticultural Society has expanded the rain garden opposite the parking lot and museum on Oak Street. This is a rain garden designed to catch, soak up and filter the stormwater before it runs over land into the lake. Rain gardens remove pollutants, reduce flooding and help recharge groundwater.

These shoes represent the effect the climate crisis has on the lives of children. The group aims to raise awareness about the climate crisis with this shoe strike. This will be a socially distanced event. It will be held from 2-4 at Maryboro Lodge Patio.

The wood circles and sticks are an icon in most Fenelon Falls childhood memories, as Tinker Toys were made right here in the Jewel of the Kawarthas. During the ’50s and ’60s, Allen Wood Products Ltd. operated near the waterfront, creating a variety of wooden toys including bowling, croquet, ring toss and the iconic Tinker Toys.
