Increase in COVID-19 Cases Forces Health Unit to Make Changes to Clinics and Contact Tracing
Dr. Natalie Bocking, Medical Officer of Health for the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit says that a recent increase in cases has stretched the capacity of the health unit staff, and the organization has had to change some process to balance the work involved with new cases while continuing to offer mass immunization clinics in the communities.
Iconic Fenelon Falls Senior Citizens’ Club looks to Evolve with the Times
The last 20 months have been very difficult on public venues intended for social and recreational purposes. The pandemic closures have been devastating for facilities which provide the much-needed occasions to meet, exercise and interact with others. The economic impact is hard felt by all involved. The Fenelon Falls Senior Citizens Club at 58 Murray Street, Fenelon Falls has lost significant revenue from the lack of venue bookings and events normally held in the building

Popular CBC Show, ‘Still Standing’, Sets up in Fenelon Falls
As the Manager of the Chamber of Commerce, I get some interesting inquiries! So it was very exciting in the spring of 2021 when a TV production company reached out about filming an episode in Fenelon Falls. Fast forward a few months and Jonny Harris, along with the crew from CBC’s “Still Standing”, are on location in the village. For more on the show, I spoke with Anne Francis, the Executive Producer. Here’s our behind the scenes Q & A.
Festive Kale Salad with Pecan Vinaigrette by TheDevineKitchen
“Holy… Holidays,” I made this salad two weeks ago for American Thanksgiving when our son was with us here in Fenelon. It was so good! The original recipe is from the November 2021 issue of Bon Appetit. I’ve never been a big fan of raw kale as I find it too tough and fibrous. But if you follow my lead and sprinkle the kale with salt and massage it to render it tender, well it’s a different story. Note my variations below, which I know will be super delicious the next time I serve it. And by-the-way, I used walnuts as that’s what I had on hand.
Early Bird Winner!

BEST GIFT EVER
If you plan to host a holiday party or get-together, don’t invite COVID-19 over for the festivities. With COVID-19 cases on the rise, and the arrival of the new, more transmissible Omicron variant in Ontario, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is promoting “small”, “safe” and “smart” as the key buzzwords for this year’s holiday season.

Construction is Winding Down and Christmas is Coming
Construction is winding down on Colborne Street as anticipation for the Christmas season builds. The nostalgically styled streetlights, new paving stones and limestone planters create a beautiful backdrop to our historic downtown, now and for years to come. The streetlights also bring the possibility for new decorations, because the familiar Christmas wreaths no longer fit on the streetlight poles. But change brings innovation and new opportunities. As part of the Santa Day festivities the committee volunteers set to work finding new homes for the wreaths, decorating parts of downtown and stringing kilometres of lights!
Three-Seed Brittle by TheDevineKitchen
This brittle is all about caramelized maple syrup embedded with three different seeds. By brittle standards, it’s thinner, softer, and only mildly sweet; no sticky stovetop mess. Enjoy it as a snack, served over yogurt, or over oatmeal. It would be wonderful as a garnish over orange-colored soups, or even over an arugula and orange or beet salad. I think it would be a nice compliment to a cheese platter too. I am very happy to have stumbled across this recipe by Rebecca Katz!
