Note about Stone Piling

Submitted by Shirley McCormick

I love your e-news about Fenelon Falls; however, I thought it important to send an environmental note about people in Ontario making inukshuks / stone piles using stones nearby, whether especially in water but also on land. You posted a photo of one in the July 30th edition (#222) and I fear it will inspire others to do it, and also lend credibility to it as an ideal pastime. The intent is enjoyment and creativity, but unfortunately, it has environmental repercussions that can be quite damaging to wildlife.

What time is it?

Submitted by Marina Hodson

I have long ago stopped being able to tell you what day it is without seriously thinking, let alone what time. Apparently, I’m not the only one. Aristotle said that “time is the measure of change” and as one day melds into the next, nothing seems to change. Anthropologist Felix Ringel studies how humans relate to time, particularly during crises and COVID has apparently impacted more than just our daily interactions with each other; it has also changed how we perceive time. This is caused, at least in part, by our feeling of being stuck without being able to plan for the future. As humans, we have an innate need to know what comes next, and without this we feel out of control, but also lose our connection to time.

#HeartForFenelon 2.0

It’s been a few months since we launched the #Heart For Fenelon campaign and the stories of kindness continue to pour in. Sometimes it’s just a small act and other times it’s a large show of support when our neighbours need to know that we have their back. Collectively every act counts and makes Fenelon Falls a place that we are proud to call our home or the place where we like to get away from it all.

Summer Fun In The Sun

Submitted by Marina Hodson

As we continue to re-open for summer activities and recognizing the great weather we have been having, it seemed appropriate to put out a quick reminder about some of the precautions we should all remember. After all, summer is a fun time that can be packed with activities but it is also a time to be wary of long-lasting health impacts, so before you head for the beach, the park or even the back-yard, Health Canada recommends you take a few minutes to learn about sun safety.

The bikes are available again by the locks in Fenelon Falls for the summer! Thanks to Diane and Jeremy Engelstad helping me move the bikes from winter storage. There are the same features that appealed to hundreds of renters last year: convenient central location on Water Street, self-rental with Movatic app from 8 am to 10 pm, comfortable and rugged bikes.

Staying Safe in the Sun, Sand, and Surf

Submitted by Kendra Fleming

Residents are being reminded that it’s not business as usual if they head out to enjoy the sun, sand and surf this summer. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit begins its beach water testing program this week in Kawartha Lakes. As it does, beachgoers are reminded that it’s important to take steps to remain safe, both in and out of the water.

COPE Service Dogs Moto Synergy Mystery Ride 2020

Submitted by Kim Jeffery

COPE Service Dogs is a non-profit organization located in Barrie but service the southern Ontario area. We raise and train dogs to be placed with people with mobility issues. What makes us different is our dogs are trained by high school students that are at risk of dropping out of school. As you can imagine we have a very long waiting list of Life Partners needing dogs. COVID-19 has made it difficult to fundraise, but I think we have come up with a fantastic idea. Please check out our Moto Synergy Mystery Ride 2020.
