These are such uncertain times for many, including our Fenelon Falls Farmers’ Market. Our plans for opening on May 15th have been put on hold for now. The trees will be marked with their type and planting instructions, and they will be set out on the front porch of the Country Cupboard for contact-less pickup.
FanSaves Helps Gift Certificate Program
Submitted by FanSaves
With local businesses forced to close or reduce their hours amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the newly launched FanSaves Helps Gift Certificate Program is helping give business owners a boost across the country, Kawartha Lakes and Fenelon Falls. The program is working with the Fenelon Falls & District Chamber of Commerce and features gift certificates from local stores which can be used once things get back to normal.
“We noticed some areas were starting their own gift certificate programs so we decided to create a one-stop-shop and a hub for gift certificates from local businesses in partnership with Chambers, BIAs and organizations in regions across Canada. This is our way of giving back during this time” explained FanSaves Co-Founder & CEO, Shannon Ferguson.
Kawartha Lakes to increase leaf and yard collection days
Submitted by Doug Elmslie
As the weather gets warmer and the snow melts away, residents across the municipality are getting ready for spring. While practicing physical distancing, many of you may want to, or have already started, doing some outdoor spring cleaning. All that yard work creates additional waste, such as leaves, branches and twigs.
Kawartha Lakes landfills remain closed to the public due to COVID-19 to ensure staff and public health and safety. To recognize the desire to dispose of leaf and yard waste, Kawartha Lakes Waste Management Division has added a second spring leaf and yard pick up for this season. In addition to the scheduled June pick up, there will now be an additional pick up in May.
Health Unit Issues Order
Submitted by Kendra Fleming
To help protect area residents, the local Health Unit is taking stronger steps to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit today (April 14) issued a Class Section 22 Order that will require anyone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19, is considered a probable case, or has had contact with a confirmed case, to self-isolate in their home for 14 days. If the person fails to self-isolate as required, the Health Unit can ask the court to fine them up to $5,000 a day.
From the Rotary Club of Fenelon Falls
Submitted by Randy Johnson
During this most difficult time, the Rotary Club of Fenelon Falls has suspended our regularly held Thursday evening meetings, but we have not gone away. We have made a donation to the Salvation Army Food Bank of $4,000.00 as well as a donation of $1,000.00 to the Kawartha Food Source, to help those in our community. The Rotary Classic Car Draw is also in suspension – however, we are still selling tickets.
COVID-19 = Feeding our Community
Submitted by WG Jackett & Sons Construction, Youngs Construction, and Rockwood Forest Nurseries
On March 11, the outbreak of COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic.
In response, communities across Ontario and the world are coming together by fundraising for those in need. Our initiative is to feed the community by providing vegetables which are potted in 1-gallon containers, through the support of three industry leaders:
- WG Jackett & Sons Construction (https://www.wgjackett.com/ )
- Youngs Construction (http://youngsconstruction.ca/ )
- Rockwood Forest Nurseries (http://www.rockwoodforest.com/
Our goal is to pot a minimum of 100,000 containers, but with a target of 200,000 containers, starting in early April, with availability for "zero contact" distribution by June.
A message from The Kawartha Store
Submitted by The Kawartha Store
This April is sure to be one like I have never experienced in my life. First thing we are hoping for is that everyone out in the world is taking care of themselves and their family. These are definitely different times for all of humankind. One thing that hasn't changed is that our Spring lines have come in and were delivered before the lockdown. Great colours and refreshing patterns, styles, and cuts. We can ship via Canada Post or deliver in the area, or you can do a curbside pick-up.

As most are aware, funeral homes and their staff are essentials workers facing the current pandemic and the fight again Covid-19. We have watched as our neighbours in Bobcaygeon face this on an almost daily basis for the last three weeks. We pray for all funeral professionals and their staff on the frontlines caring for our recently deceased.

As with everything you read and see online, continue to be diligent with your hand washing, social isolation and distancing.

Staying Connected in Difficult Times
Submitted by Marina Hodson
Well, we are three weeks into the current measures and, speaking personally, every day continues to feel new and strange. I hope that whilst you continue to practice physical social-distancing to reduce the spread, you are able to remain in contact with loved ones and take this opportunity to reach out to someone who may need someone to check on them. We may not be able to go visit, but that certainly does not mean that we should not practice random acts of kindness or reach out to those who are struggling during this difficult time.

A Coronavirus Update from Kawartha North Family Health Team
Submitted by Marina Hodson
No! Not more about the Coronavirus…
I have no doubt that you are just about ready to never hear the words Coronavirus or COVID-19 again, I know I am. Unfortunately, these are difficult and unprecedented times and ignoring the facts will not help anyone. Of course, there is so much information and it changes so rapidly, that it can be difficult to find out what the facts actually are. Well at the time of writing this is what we know and what it may mean for you.
