Development and Cottage Country – Opportunities for Lake Health Improvement Project
Local residents that might have otherwise worked or vacationed elsewhere are hunkered down. Remote working or va(stay)cationing is not unusual anymore - it has been the norm. I’ve never seen so many people as I have this past winter out enjoying the frozen lake conditions. Who knew snowboarding behind a snowmobile was a thing?!
Earth Day 2021 Presents “Take Care of the Planet”
Kawartha Lakes – Residents are encouraged to take a moment this week to learn about this year’s Earth Day theme, “Take care of the Planet”. With the stay-at-home order still in effect, Earth Day is being recognized across Canada through a variety of virtual programs and initiatives, including educational sessions and live panel discussions.

Earth Week + Free Frozen Yogurt at The Country Cupboard
Earth week begins this year on Sunday April 18 and continues to Earth Day on April 22nd. Let’s work on saving the Earth every day with these simple steps below. Now more than ever we should be working to reduce our carbon footprint and maintain a healthy earth for generations to come. For the entire Month, the Country Cupboard is offering FREE frozen yogurt to anyone who does a little litter clean up. All you have to do is take a photo of the clean up and bring it into the store. Saving the earth and eating frozen yogurt while at it, not a bad deal.
EARTH MONTH + THE COUNTRY CUPBOARD
It's Earth Month - our favourite month of the year!! We are paying you to do a litter clean up again!

We welcome new members and hope you will consider joining us!
Help keep Kawartha Lakes the naturally beautiful place it is
Media release from City of Kawartha Lakes
The municipality is made up of over 250 rivers and lakes and has over 600km of trails to explore. With so much of the area defined by natural landscapes and green spaces, it’s vital for all those who live and work here to do their part to keep the City healthy and clean. Disposing of your household waste in and/or beside public waste containers is an illegal offence and fines can be placed, just the same as the illegal dumping of waste on roadsides or ditches.
Note about Stone Piling
Submitted by Shirley McCormick
I love your e-news about Fenelon Falls; however, I thought it important to send an environmental note about people in Ontario making inukshuks / stone piles using stones nearby, whether especially in water but also on land. You posted a photo of one in the July 30th edition (#222) and I fear it will inspire others to do it, and also lend credibility to it as an ideal pastime. The intent is enjoyment and creativity, but unfortunately, it has environmental repercussions that can be quite damaging to wildlife.
Country Cupboard Giving Away 100 Trees for Earth Day
The good folks at Country Cupboard have started an annual tradition: every year, on Earth Day, they give away 100 trees that are ready to plant! There is no purchase necessary and the seedlings are only available while supplies last - first come, first served. The trees will be marked with their type and planting instructions, and they will be set out on the front porch of the Country Cupboard for contact-less pickup.

I just wanted to quickly bring your attention to the Environmental Hero Awards hosted by the City of Kawartha Lakes’ Environmental Advisory Committee (CKLEAC). This year, CKLEAC is giving out two different awards:

· The Environmental Youth Hero Award for a student or group of students in Kawartha Lakes who have shown a commitment to improving the wellness of the environment.
Nominations close on Friday, February 28 and can be submitted on our Environments page.
